Americans are or were buried in Florence's Swiss-owned so-called
'English' Cemetery, 1827-1877. The fifth City and Book conference, 11
October 2008, held at Florence's Lyceum Club International,
concentrated on these and on other American writers and artists
present in Florence in the nineteenth century and on Anglo-Florentine
writers closely associated with them. We publish the papers on Hiram
Powers,
Louisa (Adams) Kuhn and Henry Adams, James Lorimer Graham, Margaret
Fuller, Lilian Whiting, Kate Field, Theodore Parker, Richard
Hildreth, Joel Hart, Amasa Hewins, etc. at http://www.florin.ms/CBV.html
Because the Swiss owners
wanted
to
close and abandon the 'English' Cemetery, we have created a weblog at
http://piazzaledonatello.blogspot.com
and set up a petition at
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/471134975
The petition reads:
'That the Swiss-owned,
so-called
'English' Cemetery in Florence be kept open, be restored and be
declared
a UNESCO World Heritage Site'
'Che il Cimitero 'degli
Inglesi'
a Firenze di proprietà Svizzera possa ancora essere visitabile,
sia restaurato e sia dichiarato dall'UNESCO Patrimonio Mondiale
dell'Umanità'
This Cemetery in Florence is a
way
of studying the history in exile of Americans, British, Russians and
Swiss.
We seek your help in saving this treasure.
Please help! And thanks.

The very beautiful
Swiss-owned
Protestant
and Orthodox Cemetery in Florence was first bought from the Grand Duke
Leopold II of Tuscany in 1827. Its official name is the Cimitero Porta
a' Pinti for that gate had been in what is now Piazzale Donatello. The
original cemetery was designed by Carl Reishammer to nestle against the
wall by the gate.

Come appariva il Cimitero fuori della
cinta
muraria,
in prossimità della Porta a' Pinti, porta edificata da Arnolfo
di
Cambio e ri-costruita da Michelangelo; il dipinto si riferisce al
periodo
cha va dal 1827 al 1869./ From 1827-1869 the Protestant Cemetery
outside
the wall at the Porta a Pinti, the Pinti Gate, itself first built by
Arnolfo
da Cambio and reconstructed by Michelangelo, gave this appearance.
Later, Giuseppe Poggi
incorporated
it as an oval island with its tall cypresses within his great viali,
now
so filled with traffic.

The Cemetery was then
closed
in
1877, when the medieval city wall was torn down, following which it
could
only be used for the burial of ashes, not bodies. Some of the American
burials precede its closure, others, of ashes, were later. Quite often,
Americans had themselves buried in lead, to be shipped to the States
later.
These fifty years were
a time
of
great cultural energy for the Florence of the Risorgimento, briefly the
capital of Italy, in which Americans, as well as English and Russians
participated
fully. Sculptors like Hiram Powers and Joel Tanner Hart came here.
Anti-slavery
advocates like Theodore Parker and Richard Hildreth came here, there
also
being buried here the black Nubian Nadezhda (Hope) who came to Florence
at 14 with Jean-François Champollion and Ippolito Rosselini's
1828
expedition, funded by the Grand Duke, her story being told on the
marble
of her tomb in Russian in Cyrillic characters, while Lord Leighton
sculpts
a broken slave shackle on Elizabeth Barrett Browning's tomb, for her
family
had been slave owners in Jamaica but which she passionately hated,
writing
her famous sonnet on Hiram Powers' 'The Greek Slave', the sculpture
that
had been at the centre of the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition and The
Runaway Slave at Pilgrim's Point.
________
Among the American
Consuls
were
Hiram Powers and James Lorimer Graham, the latter having his portrait
medallion
sculpted by Launt Thompson, and who created a fine library and
collection
of art, which Daniel Willard Fisk, who lived in Walter Savage Landor's
Fiesole villa, would in turn follow with his magnificent collection of
books on Italian and Icelandic writers, now at Cornell University.
Henry
Adams' sister, Louise Adams Kuhn, is buried here following her death
from
tetanus in Bagni di Lucca, and
The Autobiography of Henry Adams
describes this in his 'Chaos' chapter.

Not all Americans who
visited
Florence
came to be buried here but these tombs record their friendships: Henry
James was to write of Isa Blagden; Nathaniel Hawthorne having written
of
Isa Blagden and Theodosia Garrow Trollope in his Miriam in The
Marble
Faun; and Sophia Hawthorne of Hiram Powers and Elizabeth Barrett
Browning,
in her Diary; while Margaret Fuller was likewise Elizabeth
Barrett
Browning's friend, and who becomes the eponymous heroine of Aurora
Leigh,
complete with the Brook Farm phalanstery in the nine-book epic
Elizabeth
wrote following Margaret's drowning with her baby and Italian husband
off
Fire Island, Emerson sending Thoreau to look for their bodies. A
photograph
of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's tomb by Lord Leighton would be
treasured
by Emily Dickinson and this and Aurora Leigh be alluded to in
her
'The Soul selects her own society' and other poems.

In this pre-1870 postcard photograph
one can
see
the medieval wall as still present, outlining the cross John Roddam
Spencer
Stanhope sculpted for his daughter's tomb, and the ark William Holman
Hunt
sculpted for his wife.
Poignantly, many
American
babies
are buried here, Italy being then subject to diseases like malaria,
about
which Henry James wrote, though several of Florence Nightingale's
friends
find burial here, including the physician Southwood Smith in a tomb
with
a medallion sculpted by the American Joel T. Hart, and the epitaph by
Leigh
Hunt that he advocated 'fresh air and sunlight in the home/ of the rich
poor of happier years to come'.
Many Americans have helped make this web essay possible: Jeffrey
Begeal,
Carolyn Carpenter, Robert J. Robertson, Naomi Slipp, Don and Mary
Williamson.
The Swiss and the English thank them.

JAMES LORIMER GRAHAM, JR (1836-1876), a
scholar and a diplomat, he availed himself of acquaintances and
friendships
in widely differing cultural circles. In New York, his work for Putnam's
Magazine moulded the mid-nineteenth-century American avant-garde.
He
accumulated a fine collection of art and antique manuscripts in his New
York home. President Grant appointed him Consul General in Florence,
and
he and his private museum moved into Villa Orsini, in Via Valfonda. He
took parts in works of beneficence for the city and especially for
Protestant
causes. He was a member of the Evangelical schools, initiated the
American
community's custom of holding a charity bazaar, and popularized the use
of the Christmas tree. His friend, the poet Swinbourne, wrote an elegy
to his memory. LS

JOEL TANNER HART (1810-1877), an
American sculptor and poet, lived in Florence from 1849 until his
death.
In the neighbourhood of Piazza Independenza where he made his home,
between
the Trollopes' villa and Grenough's studio, he was known as 'little Mr
Hart'. A reserved man who shied away from social life, he threw himself
wholeheartedly into his work; it was said that by studying 150 models
and
Florentine types he succeeded in creating in 30 years, the statue of a
'woman without passion, full of love', which he called 'Triumphant
Woman'. He sculpts the tomb of Southwood Smith (D20I).

Library has materials on Theodore Parker,
and seeks his Collected Works.

THEODORE PARKER (1810-1860)
Born of a modest family in
Lexington,
Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard Divinity School, specializing in a
study of German theology. He was drawn to the ideas of Coleridge,
Carlyle
and Emerson. In 1842 his doubts led him to an open break with orthodox
theology: he stressed the immediacy of God and saw the Church as a
communion
looking upon Christ as the supreme expression of God. He organized the
first congregations, called Unitarian, in Boston, and participated in
the
fight for the abolition of slavery. Seriously ill, he sought refuge in
Florence because of his friendship with the Brownings, Isa Blagden and
F.P. Cobbe, but died scarcely a month following his arrival. Frances P.
Cobbe collected and published his writings in 14 volumes. [William
Wetmore Story sculpted his tomb, replacing an earlier one and Frederick
Douglass
specifically visited this cemetery to see his tomb.] LS

Library has extensive materials on Hiram Powers

Contemporary Photograph in the Diary of Susan Horner, 1861-1862.
HIRAM
POWERS (1805-1873), an
American, even American Indian, came to Florence in 1837 to study and
work,
and settled in Via Serragli, the artists' street of the day, with his
wife
and two children. He earned an international reputation for his
statuary,
for which he liked to choose the marble and supervise its quarrying
himself,
and he received considerable acclaim for the busts he did of several
presidents
of the United States. The cemetery also contains evidence of his grief:
James (+1838), Frances (+1857) and Florence (+1857), his children, who
died at five, eight and seventeen years of age in this their adopted
land.
LS
See Library, Giuliana Artom
Treves,
Golden
Ring, passim. We are seeking
descendants
of Hiram Powers, son of Hiram Powers, the sculptor, who moved to
Florida
where he married and had a daughter.

This statue, 'The Greek Slave', was the centrepiece of the Crystal
Palace
Exhibition and the subject of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnet. It
shows
a Greek Christian slave being auctioned by Muslim Turks. In her poem
Elizabeth
draws the analogy also to American enslavement of Africans, Russian
enslavement
of serfs. Near Hiram Powers' tomb is that of Nadezda (Hope) De Santis,
a black Nubian slave baptized Orthodox, who died in Florence in
freedom.

Hiram Powers' 'The Last of Her Tribe', shows a Native American woman
fleeing her captors. Every detail is observed down to the delicate
sewing
of the mocassins. The theme repeats that of 'The Greek Slave', a woman
representing freedom against male oppressors.

Hiram Powers' statue of America, which is more truly American and
more
beautiful, than the Statue of Liberty, the gift of France. This plaster
cast was discovered in his Florentine studio in 1966, along with many
others,
were purchased by museums in Washington, D.C. but have not been
adequately
studied, publicized or exhibited. Margaret Fuller's death, along with
her
husband and baby in the shipreck of the Elizabeth off Fire
Island
was partly caused by the colossal statue by Hiram Powers in its hold.
Nathanael
Hawthorne observed him and his studio for the writing of The Marble
Faun . Among Powers' works is the head of the Princess Matilde
Buonaparte
Demidoff. Hiram Powers' sculpture career had begun with his modelling
Dante's
Commedia
in
wax in Cincinatti, Ohio, for Frances Trollope
.
