Bookbinding Laboratory, 10 (red) Via de' Velluti, off Via Maggio, opposite St Mark's Anglican Church, Oltrarno, on the way to the Casa Guidi and Pitti Palace.
Thursday or Tuesday afternoon 2:30-5:30. Bookbinding and consulting on repair and binding of nineteenth-century books. Same location.

Friday or Wednesday morning. Finishing books with leather spines, marbled-paper covers and end papers. Bookbinding Laboratory, 10 red Via de' Velluti

Participants may bring books for consultation. They may also bind texts they choose, for instance, of their own calligraphy and/or their own poetry, rather than Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets and Ballad, if their work is already prepared in suitable gatherings. The practicum will teach participants how books are assembled, thus also giving basic training in book restoration. During the stay it will be possible to stroll through Florentine streets and find botteghe carrying out fine book-binding, studying their skills. It will also be possible to buy in Florence exquisite marbled and printed papers, particularly from the Giannini family members, for use in book-binding, as well as booklets of gold leaf. A list of such stores and a map will be given to registrants.

Housing can be available for the students at the very beautiful Villa Agape with its Renaissance garden at the cost of €55 a night, bed and breakfast.

For Villa Agape, Via Torre del Gallo, 8/10, either take a taxi from the airport or use the airport bus to Santa Maria Novella Station, then take a taxi. If coming by bus and not taxi from Santa Maria Novella Station, take bus number 12 to bus stop 7 in Viale Galileo, then walk up Via del Giramontino which becomes Via Torre del Gallo. Going back into Florence take bus number 13 from bus stop 8 on Viale Galileo. Buy bus tickets before entering buses from either a newstand or a bar, asking for 'biglietti per quattro corse', using each of its four numbered parts in turn, as these are cheaper. When you board the bus put your ticket in the machine to validate it. A bus ticket allows you to travel and change buses for 70 minutes, once it has had the time stamped on it. We recommend you pack and bring mosquito repellant!
