PIETRO BAZZANTI
(1825-1895), ITALIAN

Pietro Bazzanti and his brother were not so much sculptors as artigianal workers in marble and pietra serena, observing classic topoi. His tombs are of classical sarcophagi, 'cinerary' urns upon columns, broken columns (to signify a life cut unnaturally short), while also using Egyptian motives, winged globes, butterflies, and the ourobouros.

Central commemorative column with cross, celebrative monument to patron of Swiss owned, so-called 'English' Cemetery, was designed and erected by Pietro Bazzanti. Inscription: FREDERIC GUILLAUME/ ROI DE PRUSSE/ MDCCCLVIII/ JE SUIS LA RESURRECTION ET LA VIE/ CELUI QUI CROIT EN MOI VIVRA/ QUAND MEME IT SEROIT MORT/ ST JEAN XI.25./ Cross is modeled on that by Florence's Baptistery ('Albero di San Zanobi'), with lilies and roses adorning it.

  aaSarah McCalmont

Sara McCalmont died in childbirth in Florence, the child surviving her brought back to England by the grieving clergyman husband/father. Two cousins, their descendants, came together to see the tomb, ordering its now-effected restoration, and sharing this photograph of her Regency-style portrait. She looks as if she has just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel.

ODOARDO FANTACCHIOTTI
  (1811-1877), ITALIAN

Odoardo Fantacchiotti was born in Rome and died in Florence in June. He studied at the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts under Stefan Ricci and Aristodemo Costoli. He gradually convinced himself that he should follow the ideals of Canova and Bartolini. Among the monuments he executed are "Luigi Cherubini" and one to Prince "Neri Corsini" in the church of Santa Croce (Florence), the statue of "Giovanni Boccaccio" in the arcade of the Uffizi, a bust of "Queen Margherita" in the Quirinal Palace in Rome, "Eve" in the Gallery of Modern Art in Turin, "Susanna" in the Gallery of Modern Art in Florence and "Pandora" for the Bazzanti Brothers Studio in Florence. This last work, a marble statue of limpid and academic serenity, is perhaps the most representative of his art and is not directly reminiscent either of Canova or of Bartolini.

This bust is owned by Steven Bigler in America who sent its images because he found the English Cemetery's references to Odoardo Fantacchiotti as sculpting Samuel Reginald Routh's tomb.

The sources record two sculptures carried out by this artist: that of Sir Charles Lyon Herbert and that of Lady Harriet Frances Pellew, of which only the first, perhaps, is clearly identifiable, even if in a precarious state of conservation.

On a sculpture of Henry Clay by Joel T. Hart in New Orleans. From http://www-sal.cs.uiuc.edu/~friedman/canal/canal.htm

Pictures 15, 16, and 17.
Stereo0.jpg
Three closeup views of the Henry Clay statue at the intersection of Canal and St. Charles/Royal Streets, the upper dated 1873, the middle dated 1882, and the bottom dated 1892.  The statue is about twelve feet high.  Clay is in the act of addressing the U. S. Senate, with his right hand extended in gesture.  The view is looking out toward the lake, so Clay is facing the river.

The history of the statue was featured in its inaugural ceremony, held April 12, 1860.  The sculptor, Joel T. Hart, gave the oration, in which he included the following (Harper's Weekly, April 28, 1860).

“In the year 1852, a number of public-spirited and patriotic citizens, desirous of manifesting their veneration for the character and public services of Henry Clay, formed themselves into a society named the `Clay Monument Association of New Orleans.'  Their object, as their name indicates, was to erect in this city a suitable monument to the illustrious man whose memory they designed to honor.
“They determined to erect a bronze statue of Mr. Clay, and they fixed upon this spot for its location, with the permission of the city authorities.
“On the 12th of April, 1856, the corner-stone of the pedestal was laid with becoming solemnities.  The work of making the statue was intrusted to Mr. Joel T. Hart, of Kentucky.  The Association displayed their good judgment in committing this important work to a native sculptor, whose distinguished reputation in the world of Art gave an earnest of its admirable execution; and who, born by the side of the illustrious patriot, and having early learned to contemplate his greatness, would bring to the performance of his grateful task a genius glowing with the enthusiasm of unbounded personal admiration.”  [The scultor/orator wasn't shy about himself, was he?]
“Equally judicious has been the selection of this site for the statue.  In the most frequented thoroughfare of our city—in the very heart of the metropolis, overlooking the Mississippi, the great avenue of our internal commerce, and one of the strongest natural bonds of the Union—it stands conspicuous; a noble and permanent ornament of New Orleans, and a fit monument of the gratitude and veneration of a free people.”

In the middle picture, some of the signs can be made out on the buildings on the downtown side of Canal (to our right), such as one that says “Music Store.”  Note how the electrical wires have taken over the sky by 1892.  The big tower in the bottom picture was at the Carondelet/Bourbon intersection. — S. Doctor was the father of a Scottish church. He had assisted in the communion services in the church of his own parish on the Sabbath preceding, and apparently with no decrease of energy or zeal; but he was taken ill on the evening of that day, and continued to linger, peacefully waiting for his rest, till his departure, as we have said, on the Sabbath of the week following, much about the hour, of the evening when he was first taken ill.--At Jedburgh, on the 16th inst. after a few days illness, the Rev. When Lord Leighton sculpted Elizabeth Barrett Browning's tomb he put on the lyre for the Greco-Roman world the two faces of the god Pan likely from the statue in the Giardino Torrigiani. The other two medallions represent the Hebrew harp of David, with a broken slave shackle on it for freedom from Egyptian and Babylonian bondage, and the Christian harp with the cross, these representing Europe’s rich multiculturalism.

HIRAM POWERS (1805-1873), an American, even American Indian, came to Florence in 1837 to study and work, and settled in Via Serragli, the artists' street of the day, with his wife and two children. He earned an international reputation for his statuary, for which he liked to choose the marble and supervise its quarrying himself, and he received considerable acclaim for the busts he did of several presidents of the United States. The cemetery also contains evidence of his grief: James (+1838), Frances (+1857) and Florence (+1857), his children, who died at five, eight and seventeen years of age in this their adopted land. LS
See Giuliana Artom Treves, Golden Ring, passim. We are seeking descendants of Hiram Powers, son of Hiram Powers, the sculptor, who moved to Florida where he married and had a daughter.

This statue, 'The Greek Slave', was the centrepiece of the Crystal Palace Exhibition and the subject of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnet. It shows a Greek Christian slave being auctioned by Muslim Turks. In her poem Elizabeth draws the analogy also to American enslavement of Africans, Russian enslavement of serfs. Near Hiram Powers' tomb is that of Nadezda (Hope) De Santis, a black Nubian slave baptized Orthodox, who died in Florence in freedom.

Hiram Powers' 'The Last of Her Tribe', shows a Native American woman fleeing her captors. Every detail is observed down to the delicate sewing of the mocassins. The theme repeats that of 'The Greek Slave', a woman representing freedom against male oppressors.

Hiram Powers' statue of America, which is more truly American and more beautiful, than the Statue of Liberty, the gift of France. This plaster cast was discovered in his Florentine studio in 1966, along with many others, were purchased by museums in Washington, D.C. but have not been adequately studied, publicized or exhibited. Margaret Fuller's death, along with her husband and baby in the shipreck of the Elizabeth off Fire Island was partly caused by the colossal statue by Hiram Powers in its hold. Nathanael Hawthorne observed him and his studio for the writing of The Marble Faun. Among Powers' works is the head of the Princess Matilde Buonaparte Demidoff. Hiram Powers' sculpture career had begun with his modelling Dante's Commedia in wax in Cincinatti, Ohio, for Frances Trollope. This tomb for a year-old child, near his own, is by him:
